Jalan Alor is one of the most vibrant night street food markets in Asia. Located in the Bukit Bintang area, this street lights up at dusk and serves its hungry bunch of customers till late at night.
A good time to visit this street would be after 11 pm. Whenever I visit Malaysia, I visit this street at least twice in order to try out all the deliciousness it has to offer.
Here are the top 11 Snacks/Meals I recommend, if you visit Jalan Alor:
[Note: In most cases I did not specify exactly where in Jalan Alor you will find these treats, but it’s more fun to walk around the street and discover these places yourself, isn’t it? ;)]
1. Barbecued Chicken Wings at Wong Ah Wah
2. Fried Whole Squid
3. Otak Otak
Otak Otak is a grilled fish cake wrapped inside a banana leaf. Each stick of otak otak serves a very small portion, so you might want to try 3-4 of these at one go.
Each cuisine has its own specialty dish based on meat on a stick. Satay is the Malay and Indonesian traditional version of seasoned & skewered meat on a stick. However at Jalan Alor, apart from the crowd favorite beef satay, you can find choices of satay of almost anything; starting from seafood to vegetables. Just choose the ones you like and the chef will grill/ fry them for you. The satay comes with a wide range of sauces including their signature peanut sauce.
6. Green Mussel Curry
7. Fried Chicken Bits
I found this one stall which sells fried chicken bits, which includes drumsticks, chicken breasts, heart, liver, wings, legs, skin etc… I particularly enjoyed the fried chicken skin. Whatever you buy from this store, will be chopped, seasoned and drizzled with chili sauce which elevates the tastiness of these crunchy delights to a whole new level.
8. Grilled Oyster with Peanuts
10. Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich from Polar Bear Ice Cream Cart
11. Coconut Ice Cream in a Coconut Shell
